Opus One 2009

In 30 vintages since the dual release of the 1979 &1980 Opus One has maintained a careful balance between the opulence of ripe California fruit and the complex, sometimes austere, style of winemaking that has made Bordeaux a benchmark in the wine world. The release of the 2009 on October 1st again demonstrated why this property is considered one of Napa's finest.

Vibrant primary aromas of violet, black raspberry and cassis on both the nose and palate are layered with complex notes of licorice, iodine, smoke and spice. Well structured but exquisitely buffered with loads of  aromatic fruit, the wine comes across as polished and sophisticated, weighty without being heavy - exhibiting a plush, silky texture that leads to an extremely long, smooth finish. Very approachable now with a greater percentage of Cabernet Franc than has previously been used in the blend no doubt contributing to the early accessibility. Not quite as fleshy as the 2008, but larger scaled than the 2007.

It made an excellent match with a lunch of Braised Short Rib in red wine demi-glace sauce at Al Biernat's. The wine's darker elements complimented the complex beefy flavor of the fork tender meat, while the unctuous texture of both the short rib and demi-glace found their match in the supple power of Cabernet Sauvignon. Graceful woodsy and herbal notes from the Cabernet Franc and Malbec added a graceful note to a delicious side order of tender grilled asparagus.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 81%, Cabernet Franc 9%, Petit Verdot 6%, Merlot 3%, and Malbec 1%.
